Born Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego on April 19th 1960, is a Colombian politician and economist who currently serve as senator of the Republic of Colombia. A Gustavo Petro of just 17 years joined the guerrilla group 19th of April Movement that eventually advanced into the M-19 Democratic Alliance.
Gustavo Petro served as a senator and a member of the Alternative Democratic Pole party following the 2006 Colombian parliamentary election with the second-largest vote in the country. In 2009, he resigned his position to aspire to the presidency of Colombia in the 2010 Colombian presidential election, finishing 4th in the race.

Gustavo Petro was born in rural Ciénaga de Oro, in the Córdoba Department, in 1960 to farmer parents mother Clara Nubia Urrego and father Gustavo Petro Sierra. Petro’s family moved to a more serene environment called Zipaquirá, north of Bogotá, during the 1970s
